For this workshop we will simplify the encaustic studio and the process of painting. Using thin coats of encaustic paint (wax) applied with bigger brushes and high quality pigment in stick form, we will "trap" our marks, drawings and mistakes under layers of wax to create rich and dynamic images. Learn how to create smooth, depth filled paintings involving abstract and landscape imagery. Day one will cover the basics and the buildup of depth and texture in an abstract painting. Day two will be spent on landscape imagery. Collage will be covered on day three. If you are new to encaustic painting, don't worry, we will cover the basics to get you started and then begin adding design, image and additional media to the process. Enjoying using R&F Paints delicious encaustic paint and pigment sticks as part of your materials fee. Students should plan on bringing wooden panels to work on, panels also available for purchase.

Encaustic Painting & Mixed-Media Workshops

The ancient art of wax painting is a perfect compliment for mixed media work. By combining encaustic painting with current imagery and content, the workshop aims to guide students into the creation of a meaningful and contemporary expression. We will experiment with the use of pigment sticks, etching and imprinting, and oil washes combined with the wax. If you are new to encaustic painting, don’t worry, we will cover the basics to get you started and then begin adding images and additional media. For those with some encaustic experience, we will look into some additional techniques not previously covered. Spend each day working in the studio with the instructor demonstrating new technieques each day and answering individual questions.

Brush Dance Workshops

This exploratory workshop is a continuation of Shawna Moore's lifelong study of painting, drawing and movement. We will practice yoga and classical and free Zen calligraphy, as we explore how brush, mind, body, and each other are parts of a unified whole. Through both practices we witness joy while exploring the creative process. We will also create original spontaneous works. For beginners and seasoned artists.

______

Shawna Moore is a full time studio artist. Her encaustic paintings are found in contemporary galleries and collections throughout the country. Her curiosity to the bridge between conscious movement and art has lead her to calligraphy teachers in the U.S. and Vietnam. Most recently she worked with Sensei Kazuaki Tanahashi author of Brush Mind. Tanahashi is a master calligrapher, Dogen scholar, and social activist.

Moore, also a certified yoga teacher, studied extensively with Prajna Yoga's Tias Little while living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She continues her learning process with her teacher, working toward a 500 hour certification in addition to a dedicated yoga practice and periodic teaching.
